As we are facing across each other in between two PC terminals, my boss threw me off with that question for the first time, when blogging first became a craze (or it's long been there and we just missed its unveiling?). My answer was oblique, "A personal journal made public?"
My reflex reaction was predictable. I immediately tapped my keyboard and put in the words "define: blog" to google. The search engine toggled a generous list of definitions on the web, but I found this one (by a certain Philip Greenspun) justifying my uncertain reply:
"An online journal, published frequently (often daily). Readers can post comments on each journal entry. Some blogs gain a wide readership...the term blog is a shortening of weblog."
Now I'm hooked.
